About Ahousaht First Nation

Ahousaht is a Nuu-chah-nulth Nation whose territory covers much of Clayoquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht) is a Nuu-chah-nulth Nation whose territory covers much of Clayoquot Sound, including Vargas and Flores Islands and Herbert, Shelter and Sydney Inlets. The main village, Maaqtusiis, is on Flores Island near Tofino and can be reached only by water or air. Neighbouring nations formally joined with the Ahousaht in the 20th century.

Ahousaht life is guided by the Nuu-chah-nulth worldview Hishuk ish tsawalk, meaning "everything is one." Head Hereditary Chief Maquinna has described Ahousaht values as respect, caring, helping and teaching. Whaling was an important cultural practice in the past, and the Nation's language is Nuučaan̓uɫ.

Fishing, especially salmon fishing, is still central to the economy. The Nation also has an economic partnership with Cermaq Canada, runs the Wild Side Trail and offers eco-cultural tours. Its land-use vision calls for protecting 80% of Ahousaht territory.

Ahousaht is governed by three principal hereditary chiefs together with an elected chief and council. It is the largest member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. Facilities in Maaqtusiis include:

  • A community hall and gym
  • A youth centre
  • A health centre
  • A K-12 school
